Who We AreBCARC is the B.C. Association of Restoration Contractors. Most commonly, a restoration contractor undertakes to repair/re-build existing homes and business structures that have sustained damage as a result of fire, windstorm, flood, vandalism, etc (in contrast, a general contractor is usually involved in new construction only). In 2006, in discussions with WorkSafeBC, a task group consisting of restoration industry representatives was advised that restoration contractors had injury rates three times greater than "all industry" and 50% more injury than the construction sector in general. Several leading restoration companies in B.C. created BCARC in response to an increasing incidence of workplace injuries and associated costs. The primary objective of BCARC was initially to focus on health and safety related issues facing the restoration industry. However, through its efforts to understand the underlying issues BCARC has come to recognize that health and safety improvements are tied to an array of underlying issues, challenges and opportunities that the industry as a whole faces: the labour market, the absence of standards and training for the workforce, the growing sophistication of restoration work and the provincial regulatory environment. BCARC is the first association of restoration contractors in Canada. It represents almost 80% of the BC industry and comprises several of the largest companies in this sector in Canada. BCARC is committed to the realization of a professional, qualified and stable workforce that is equipped to address improved health and safety practices.
